Tanzania’s Birdlife is equally prolific, with 1,100 recorded species, though it receives less international attention. For many safari goers, bird watching usually becomes more noticeable after several days on safari, particularly around lakes, swamps, and river systems.
Lake Manyara National Park is one of the most reliable birding destinations in Tanzania due to its groundwater forest, lake edge habitat, and seasonal waterbird populations. Most iconic birds include flamingos, fish eagles, hornbills, kingfishers, bee eaters, storks, grey crowned cranes, ostriches and vultures.
Hippos and crocodiles dominate many of the permanent water systems within northern Tanzania. Serengeti’s river networks, particularly in the western corridor and northern sections, support large crocodile populations associated with migration crossings.
