The day begins with an early pick up from your hotel in Arusha or another agreed location before driving toward Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, registration formalities are completed while the mountain guide provides a short briefing covering the trail, weather conditions, elevation, and walking pace for the day. Depending on group size, porters may assist with lunch boxes, drinking water, and other essentials before the walk begins.
Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895mt above sea level. The Marangu Route enters a dense montane forest where towering camphor trees, moss covered trunks, and thick undergrowth create cooler conditions during the first section of the trek. Blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, turacos, and smaller forest birds are regularly encountered along the trail.
The ascent toward Mandara Hut takes several hours with enough time for short stops along the route. Positioned at about 2,700mt, Mandara Hut provides a practical resting point surrounded by forest clearings and volcanic terrain shaped by earlier geological activity from the mountain itself. Lunch is served here before taking time to rest and observe the surrounding environment.
During clear weather, distant views extending toward the Kenyan plains become visible beyond the forest edge. The descent follows the same route back toward Marangu Gate with the late afternoon reserved for the drive to Arusha. Expect to arrive in evening and drop off at the hotel or your preferred location.
