Stone Town, North Zanzibar
This 3-day Zanzibar vacation visits the old city of Stone Town and the paradisiac beaches of the island’s northern coast.
The first part of the trip introduces the historical side of Zanzibar through former merchant houses, carved wooden doors, old mosques, and narrow alleyways shaped by centuries of trade between Africa, Arabia, and India. From there, the pace slows down the beach, where the days revolve around the ocean and long stretches of white sand edged by dhows and tide pools.
Arrival in Zanzibar is followed by a short transfer into Stone Town, where the older part of the island still carries traces of its trading past through coral stone buildings, busy intersections, and weathered balconies facing the sea. Depending on arrival time, the afternoon allows for a guided walk through the town, passing historical landmarks such as the Old Fort, Darajani Market, and the former slave market site.
The streets remain active throughout the day with local vendors, school children, small cafés, and fishermen returning toward the waterfront before sunset. Lunch is served at a local restaurant in town. Later in the evening, return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

The morning starts with breakfast before departure toward the northern coast of Zanzibar, a drive that passes through villages, spice farms, coconut groves, and stretches of open countryside rarely seen by travellers who remain inside the resorts. By late morning, arrival at the beach hotel allows time to settle in before lunch at the resort restaurant. The northern coast offers calmer tides compared to other parts of the island, making it easier for swimming during most hours of the day.
The remainder of the afternoon remains open for personal activities such as beach walks, dhow excursions, or simply resting beside the ocean. Local fishermen can often be seen preparing their wooden boats near the shore before sunset. Dinner is served at the resort followed by overnight near the beach.

A slower morning fits naturally here, especially after two active days moving between town and the coast. Breakfast is served at the resort before the day continues at an easy pace beside the Indian Ocean.
Depending on departure timing, there may be an opportunity for a short swim, a walk through the nearby village, or time on the beach watching local activity continue along the shoreline. Unlike the busier sections of Stone Town, the north coast moves quietly through the morning with fishermen heading out on smaller boats and seaweed gatherers working near the reef during low tides. Lunch can be arranged at the resort before transfer back to Zanzibar Airport or harbour for onward travel, bringing your stay on the island to an end.
